The mission of the Ottawa Botanical Garden Society
is:
To re-establish and enhance a botanic garden at the Central
Experimental Farm, in the National Capital Region, dedicated to display
the diversity of plant life, explain the economic and social role of
plants, and expand our knowledge of plants and their cultivation. The
garden would contribute to the conservation of the world's botanical
heritage and provide enjoyment of plants for all.
A botanical garden is devoted to the study and public
display of native and foreign plants and trees. It usually includes
greenhouses for the cultivation of plants which cannot be grown easily
in the local climate.
At the Ottawa Botanical Garden:
Local residents and tourists will find peace, quiet and
enjoyment when they walk among the flower beds and between the many
different trees in the arboretum area of the garden.
Visitors will also be able to take guided tours and extension
programmes on many aspects of botany, horticulture, and related environmental
subjects.
Programmes on the history of gardening in Canada and on
the advances in horticulture research undertaken by Agriculture and
Agri-Food Canada will be offered to special interest groups.
Research scientists will be able to take part in systematic
categorization and breeding of native and garden plants that grow in
our severe climate.
Special attention will be paid to the cultivation and
protection of threatened and endangered species from Canada and elsewhere
in the world.
A special programme in garden therapy will be developed
to encourage the physically and mentally challenged members of society
to take an active and meaningful role in gardening and in running the
gardens.
Links to educational institutions in the region will allow
the facilities to be used to train students and provide them with seasonal
employment and work experience.
